Ferias and corridas - Camargue bull games - Bulls running in the streets - Glossary of bullfighting terms

In the Camargue, more than anywhere else in France, the bull is king.
Bulls have lived here in the swamps since Roman times, and are part of our daily life. They are the center of many of our cultural traditions, either the Camargue bulls, the heros of the bull games, or the "toros braves", descendants of Spanish bulls that fight in the arena.

Spanish bullfighting first appeared in France in 1701. Once the Roman arena in Arles was restored starting in 1825, bull games could be organized. The first corrida or Spanish bullfight took place in this arena in 1853. Arles is home to a bullfighting school where about thirty young students learn the basics of bullfighting each year. There is also a school for youngsters interested in learning the techniques of the Camargue bull games.
