The Festival Committee wrote up by-laws for the election of a Queen of Arles in 1930 for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Frédéric Mistral's birth.
An election has taken place every three years since then (interrupted during World War II) and the next Queen will be elected on May 1, 2008. The winner, chosen among several candidates, all born in Arles from old Arlesian families, will be the 18th Queen of Arles.
As her predecessors, she will, during her reign and assisted by her ladies-in-waiting, fill her role as the incarnation of the Provençal culture, costume and language. Traditionnally she is crowned during the Festival of Arles, at the beginning of the month of July, in the Roman theater.
