Camargue - Crau - Alpilles and Montagnette - Rhone River - Visit the Camargue

The magic word Camargue evokes a land where men live amid horses, bulls, birds, sky and water.

It is a unique landscape, a magic country where preserved natural spaces create a fragile sanctuary for exceptional European fauna and flora.

Located between the two branches of the Rhone River (the Camargue is a delta with the Grand Rhone on the southeast side and the Petit Rhone on the southwest), these vast wetlands cover about 100,000 hectares and represent the largest and one of the most secret wetlands in France. It can be divided into three different zones : the saltworks on the west and east sides, and the lagoons and dunes on the south.

It is a territory created by man, who shaped the space notably by diking the two branches of the Rhone and the seacoast. The agricultural development centers on products adapted to the land such as rice and salt. Man controls the fresh waters of the Rhone, the salt waters of the Mediterranean and the delta farm land.
One hundred farms raise Camargue horses and bulls here. For the « gardian » or Camargue cowboy, the horse is first and foremost a companion, but also a workmate. And by man’s intervention nature has been preserved thanks to the creation of the Regional Nature Park and the nature preserve, including sites open to the public.

The Camargue is also a bird sanctuary. About 400 species of birds have been spotted here, including the pink flamingo, the symbol of the Camargue birds. Visitors need to take time to explore the Camargue by following the marked walking and biking trails or by taking a horseback ride on a white Camargue horse, the ideal way of visiting.
